Microsoft Just Shut Down Movies & TV Store Without Warning Here’s Why We Need to Fight Back

Sudden Notice of Microsoft Movies & TV store shutdown

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share something important about Microsoft’s sudden shutdown of the Movies & TV storefront on Windows and Xbox. They basically pulled the plug without giving us clear notice or any real information on what happens next such as : How long support will last, How they will handle that if downloading becomes a non option later, etc.

Here’s the deal:

Microsoft marketed these digital purchases as if you were owning the content (“Buy now and own forever,” “Add to your collection,” etc.).

Now, with the store gone, they say your purchased content will still be accessible but they refuse to guarantee for how long, offer refunds, or let you move your collection elsewhere other than movies anywhere depending on availability.

Many people (myself included) have noticed some titles don’t even show up on services like Movies Anywhere, so it’s unclear if everything will stay available.

Essentially, what we thought was permanent ownership turns out to be a temporary license that can be revoked at any time.

As a consumer, this is frustrating and frankly unethical. As someone who bought into this system believing I had real ownership, it feels like we’ve been misled.

What can we do?

File an FTC complaint. I just did, and I strongly encourage everyone who’s affected or concerned to do the same. The FTC can investigate unfair or deceptive business practices and Microsoft’s vague promises and misleading marketing fit that bill.

Spread the word. Share this post or your own story. The more noise we make, the harder it is for companies to get away with these shady tactics.

Demand transparency and real ownership. If you’re a content creator or business owner like me, consider how you want to treat your own customers. We need to push for a future where buying digital content actually means owning it.

Why this matters:

We’re in a new digital age, but many companies still treat “ownership” like a moving target. If we don’t stand up now, future digital purchases could vanish without recourse, and the phrase “buy” will just mean “license to use for now.”

Let’s take control of our digital libraries before they disappear.
